In today's competitive market, the initial job interview is increasingly a digital encounter—not with a recruiter, but with an artificial intelligence. Platforms developed by companies such as CodeSignal, Humanly, and Eightfold now deploy AI avatars to conduct preliminary screenings via video call, questioning candidates and evaluating their responses. Proponents argue this method allows firms to assess a larger pool of applicants efficiently and may reduce human bias by focusing solely on verbal answers. However, critics note the systems are trained on internet data rife with societal prejudices, making a truly neutral evaluation unlikely.

I recently experienced this directly, undergoing simulated interviews for several roles using three different AI platforms. While the technical performance varied—some interactions felt smoother than others—a persistent discomfort remained. The experience of speaking into my webcam, met by an avatar's simulated gaze and responses, was deeply unsettling. Each session, despite its functional purpose, left me with a distinct preference for human conversation.

As these tools become more common, they prompt essential questions about the hiring process in 2026. Can a standardized digital gatekeeper truly understand a candidate's potential?
