Spotify is testing a feature that allows users to directly edit the AI-generated profile that dictates their music recommendations. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström revealed the new tool at South by Southwest, framing it as a shift toward collaborative curation.
Currently, Spotify’s ‘Taste Profile’ is built silently by an algorithm that monitors every play, skip, and save. This profile powers personalized playlists like Discover Weekly and the annual Wrapped. The upcoming feature, however, will first show users how the app interprets their taste, then let them adjust it.
In a limited beta launching soon in New Zealand, listeners will be able to promote or demote specific artists, genres, or moods. Prefer more classic rock and less electronic music in your mixes? You can now make that request directly. The goal is to let user input actively refine what appears on the homepage and in automated playlists over time.
This move signals a broader industry trend toward making opaque recommendation systems more transparent and interactive. Instead of being passive recipients of algorithmic choices, Spotify users are being invited to become co-editors of their own musical experience.
