OpenAI Acquires Security Firm Promptfoo to Fortify AI Agents
OpenAI announced on Monday its acquisition of cybersecurity startup Promptfoo. The move is designed to bolster security for the increasingly complex AI agents the company is developing. While financial details were not released, Promptfoo's 11-person team and its technology will be integrated into OpenAI's Frontier AI agent platform.
Promptfoo specializes in tools that test and secure AI systems. Its CEO, Ian Webster, stated that validating these systems grows more difficult as they connect to live data and infrastructure. "By joining OpenAI, we can significantly advance this work," Webster said, "delivering stronger security and governance for teams deploying AI in practical applications."
As part of the deal, OpenAI committed to maintaining Promptfoo's open-source project, which allows engineers to evaluate prompts and compare outputs across models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The startup had recently secured its position in the market, closing an $18.4 million Series A round led by Insight Partners in July 2025. According to PitchBook, the company had raised a total of $22.68 million, with a post-valuation of $85.5 million at that time.
The acquisition highlights the growing focus on AI safety infrastructure. Promptfoo's investor Andreessen Horowitz has been actively directing capital toward defense and infrastructure projects, part of a broader $15 billion fundraising initiative it detailed earlier this year. The firm earmarked specific funds for growth, apps, and infrastructure investments, signaling sustained interest in the foundational layers of technology.
