ByteDance Halts Global Expansion of Seedance AI After Copyright Clash

ByteDance has stopped its plans to release the Seedance 2.0 AI video generator outside of China, according to a report from The Information. This decision follows a contentious launch in its home market last month, which prompted legal threats from major Hollywood studios including Disney and Paramount Skydance over alleged copyright infringement.

The tool, which allows users to create short video clips from text prompts, drew immediate scrutiny. A widely-shared video that appeared to depict Brad Pitt fighting Tom Cruise highlighted concerns that the underlying model may have been trained on copyrighted film footage without permission. In February, ByteDance stated to the BBC that it was enhancing safeguards to prevent the unauthorized use of intellectual property, but the company's timeline for a broader release was never clear.

Citing two people familiar with the internal decision, The Information reported the global rollout is now suspended. Engadget has contacted ByteDance for confirmation and additional details. The pause signals the ongoing legal and ethical challenges facing generative video technology, especially as content creators and rights holders intensify their scrutiny of AI training data sources. The move leaves a significant gap in the competitive AI video market for 2026.
