Anthropic Files Federal Lawsuit, Challenging Pentagon's 'Supply Chain Risk' Designation
In a significant legal challenge, AI company Anthropic has sued the U.S. government. The lawsuit, filed Monday in a California federal court, contests the Pentagon's recent decision to label the startup a national security threat and add it to a defense procurement blacklist.
The designation, confirmed last week, treats Anthropic similarly to foreign adversaries. It mandates that defense contractors certify they do not use Anthropic's AI models in work for the Department of Defense. The company calls the move "unprecedented and unlawful" in its complaint, stating it has triggered contract cancellations and jeopardizes hundreds of millions in revenue.
The conflict stems from a fundamental disagreement over AI use. Anthropic, which secured a $200 million DoD contract last July and deployed its technology on classified networks, was renegotiating terms. The Pentagon sought broad access to its models for all lawful purposes. Anthropic demanded safeguards against uses in fully autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance programs. Talks stalled, and President Trump later directed agencies to stop using Anthropic technology.
"Seeking judicial review does not change our commitment to using AI for national security," an Anthropic spokesperson stated, "but this is a necessary step to protect our business and partners."
The lawsuit names more than a dozen federal agencies as defendants. Anthropic argues the government's actions threaten to destroy the value of a leading company in a critical technological field. The Department of Defense has not yet commented on the litigation.
